Hi all,
"Why did we call the 410-512 Khz band "I.F." frequencies - "

The IF (Intermediate Frequency) was / is more a 'technical frequency' than
an operating freq.
It was / is normally avoided as an operational band.

455kc is a commonly used IF freq.
The incoming freq is mixed with the Local Osc freq (tuned) to give the IF.
This can be easily filtered, amplified (mixed with BFO for CW) to produce an
audible output.
This product is in between the incoming freq and amplifier/detector stages.
Hence it is the 'Intermediate Frequency'.

The term carried into operator use for freqs near this 455kc but I don't
believe it was meant to do so.

As operating freqs moved higher up the spectrum, higher IFs were chosen to
push the unwanted Image Freq out of range.
But I'm sure we all knew this, hihi.

73,

John.
