I too saw that article and am going to order the TT keyer mentioned.  As far 
as a straight key, wouldn't a simple CPO buffered into the HT/base VHF rig 
mike input along with some sort of parallel switch for the PTT work? By the 
way,  I thought the idea for MCW for VHF/UHF was great.
