I met and logged for a great OT at field day that has contested
all of his life, voice and CW. He complained of failing hearing
and arthritis in his hands, he brought a IBM clone keyboard
and a MFJ keyboard keyer. I didn't think much about it until
he started operating, he was good, and he pulled out call signs
that I could not begun to copy. The keyer had to be reset twice
in 4 hours, it had side tone but the rig wasn't being keyed.
Perhaps loose RF in the travel trailer we used for the CW station.
(imagine that, an air conditioned CW station after all of these years)
He used his two index fingers to hunt and peck to send,
without much finger motion, he appeared to not be a touch typist,
if he was the arthritis would have been harder on him,
I am a touch typist and I have arthritis starting to set in
and now it is easier to iambicly key that to type,
as I get worse this might reverse.
He was averaging about 47 contacts a minute for about two hours.
He would make 5 or 6 contacts, then he would twist the dial,
make 5 or 6 and . . .
Some folks seem to have no imagination, try to develop some,
read more Science fiction please.
