There's now an emergency phone patch available in Gerlach. It's been
installed by the Black Rock Amateur Radio Association (BRARA),
http;//cq-blackrock.org. They have a new repeater at 444.175 PL 100.0,
IRLP node 7249. I'm told the IRLP node is temporarily down.
To access 911, simply enter 911. You'll get a recorded message saying that
you have 2 choices. Choice 1 is to dial 911 again---that will connect you
to Washoe County Emergency Services. Anyone can do this. Choice 2 is to
enter a personal access code followed by the pound key. You must be a
BRARA member to get an access code. You then get prompted to enter in a
phone number.
This repeater is located in Gerlach near the gas station and the coverage
area is primarily north of Gerlach to Black Rock Hot Springs.
BRARA also has a second IRLP node on VHF, 146.700 PL 100, node 3075. This
is a simplex node and you will probably need to disable the automatic
offset on your radio. This one is working.
They also have an APRS digipeater at 144.390 gatewayed to the Internet.
For more information on the whole thing, to become a member, or to make
contributions to this welcome addition to amateur radio in the Black Rock,
go to http://cq-blackrock.org.
The Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock are working on a 2nd, wide area VHF
repeater that should be installed in the Granite Mountains later this
year.
