On April 2 I will set foot on the southern terminus of the Pacific Crest
National Scenic Trail (PCT) at the Mexico border near Campo, California,
aiming to reach the northern end of the PCT in Manning Provincial Park in
British Columbia several months later.

I will be operating VHF/UHF FM and APRS with my Kenwood TH-D7A(G)
transceiver, coupled with a Garmin GPSmap 60C receiver. In addition, I will
be carrying an Elecraft KX1 HF CW transceiver, newly equipped with a module
for 30 and 80 meters, making it a 20, 30, 40 and 80/75 m rig. In addition
to CW-to-CW contacts, I will be equipped for CW-to-USB and CW-to-LSB
contacts on 20, 40 and 75 meters. (You may want to look for my coming Short
Takes review of the Elecraft KXB3080 module for the KX1 in a future issue of
QST.) See the biography section of the N7RR QRZ.com listing for operational
details, including periodic midday short-QSO operations (Exchange: callsign,
Maidenhead grid and name) on 20, 30 and 40 meters CW, as well as APRS
contacts at any time during the journey.

I would appreciate your letting hams of all license classes in your section
know about this Amateur Radio trek, especially those interested in APRS,
traffic handling, and portable operating.

I'll be using 80 m principally for CW traffic nets in the evenings, but I'll
be open for 80 m and FM repeater skeds (preferably between 2000 and 2030
PDT) after April 5. Send an APRS message to N7RR or a formal amateur
radiogram to N7RR via the Southern California Net (SCN), Mon-Fri PDT, on
3598 kHz at 0215 Z after daylight savings time begins. As I progress
farther north through the summer and fall, I'll be checking into:

the Northern California Net (NCN) on 3630 kHz at 0200 Z,
the Oregon Section Net (OSN) on 3587 kHz at 0130 Z,
the Idaho Montana Net (IMN) on 3647 kHz at 0300 Z,
the Washington State Net (WSN) on 3658 kHz at 0145 Z,
and the British Columbia Emergency Net (BCEN) on 3652 kHz at 0200 Z.

You may wish to save the link below to track my APRS transmissions. My
location will be a good indicator for guessing which net I'll be using. The
Idaho Montana Net is the wildcard. People check into that net from many
places in addition to Idaho and Montana. I will be checking into IMN
whenever my schedule permits and propagation is favorable.

If you know of any SSB traffic nets which would welcome my checking in and
passing traffic on CW, please let me know.

When I run across a public telephone along the way, I will be able to send
and receive emails through the PocketMail system, using my
n7rr at pocketmail.com email address. If you would like to receive periodic PCT
bulletins via email, please let me know by that email address.

Thank you very much for your help.

73,
Bruce Prior N7RR / VE7HR
