1100 am PDT Tue may 24 2005
...Flood Warning is cancelled for the West Fork of the Carson River
between Woodfords California and Centerville Nevada...
...A Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice for the
west Walker River between Walker and Topaz California...
...A Flood Warning remains in effect for the mainstem of the Walker
River in Lyon County Nevada...including Mason...Yerington and
Wabuska...
...High flows will continue through this week on the eastern Sierra
rivers and tributaries...
Warm temperatures will continue to melt snow in the Sierra this
week. However...the snow pack is decreasing allowing flows to
slowly decrease this week on tributaries of the Carson...Walker and
Truckee rivers. Rises on the mainstem Carson and Walker rivers will
occur as the high flows in the eastern Sierra reach western
Nevada.
Minor flooding is occurring near Coleville...however water levels
are expected to recede by the end of this week. Minor flooding is
occurring along the Walker River from Mason to Wabuska. Sandbagging
in the Mason and Yerington area was necessary to protect some
structures near the river.
Anyone venturing near eastern Sierra rivers and streams...should be
aware of the high and cold flows. Keep small children well away
from rivers and streams as they can easily be swept away.
Hypothermia is danger in cold water and can set in quickly as the
body's temperature drops to dangerous levels. Warning signs for
hypothermia include uncontrollable shivering...memory
loss...disorientation...incoherence...slurred speech...drowsiness and
apparent exhaustion. Hypothermia can be fatal.
Following are the forecasts...
For the Carson River basin...
For the West Fork of the Carson River at Woodfords...the stage at 8
am Tuesday was 12.9 feet. Flood stage is 14 feet. The river is
forecast to fluctuate near 13 feet through Wednesday. No flooding
is occurring or expected.
For the East Fork of the Carson River at Markleeville...the stage at
7 am Tuesday was 5.7 feet. The unofficial flood stage is 7 feet. The
river is forecast to fluctuate between 5 feet and 6 feet through
Wednesday.
For the East Fork of the Carson River at Gardnerville...the stage at
9 am Tuesday was 6.4 feet. Flood stage is 9.5 feet. The river is
forecast to fluctuate between 7 and 8 feet through Wednesday.
For the Carson River at Carson City...the stage at 8 am Monday was
6.9 feet. Flood stage is 10 feet. The river will fluctuate near 7
feet through Wednesday.
For the Carson River near fort Churchill...the stage at 6 am Tuesday
the stage was 7.9 feet. The unofficial flood stage is 10 feet. The
river will remain near 8 feet through Wednesday.
For the Walker River basin...
For the West Fork of the Walker River at Coleville...the stage at 9
am Tuesday was 7.6 feet. Flood stage is 9 feet. The river will
fluctuate between 8 feet and 9 feet through Wednesday. Minor lowland
flooding will continue between Walker and Topaz.
For the West Fork of the Walker River near Wellington...the stage at
6 am Tuesday was 6.6 feet. The unofficial flood stage is 7.5 feet.
The river will fluctuate near 6.5 feet through Wednesday.
For the mainstem Walker River near Wabuska...the stage at 6 am
Tuesday was 9.3 feet. The unofficial flood stage is 9.7 feet. The
river will remain steady near 9.5 feet through Wednesday.
