Hello to all,

We received a phone call from Merrily Evans this afternoon, and I am sure you
all want to hear the news:

Bob had surgery at Stanford Medical Center yesterday for removal of a kidney.
  A malignant tumor had caused very severe pain and bleeding into the urine,
and those were the reasons Bob went to the hospital last week, and medical
imaging there showed the presence of the tumor.  There were no signs of 
metastasis
at surgery, and Pathology reports will be back in about a week.  His doctor
says Bob will not ride a bicycle for 6 - 8 weeks, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Maybe he'll rig up training wheels and be aboard in a week or two (maybe).

Drive, Stanford, CA 94305.

Bob expects to be home this weekend (July 31st &after), but can probably be
contacted at the Medical Center on his cell phone (775) 450-4543 tomorrow or
Friday for short conversations.  Merrily says calls from his Nevada friends 
here
really perk him up.  His cell phone still has a local Nevada number and he
says that it has no long-distance charges.
