Greetings to everyone in the Nevada Section!
NOTE! The Carson City, Washoe and Douglas County ARES organizations have
just finished working round-the-clock supporting various agencies on the
Waterfall Fire surrounding Carson City. First reports are that the
agencies are extremely pleased with our help. Stay tuned for a complete
report next month.
This year's two-day emergency communications symposium EMCOMMWEST 2004
was combined with the Reno Spring Ham Swap and ARRL Forum for a very
full weekend. A half-dozen northern clubs pulled together to host 150
participants from all over the country and everyone agreed it was an
unqualified success.
Next year's EMCOMMWEST 2005 will be held the weekend of May 14-15 at the
Reno Holiday Inn with Spring Ham Swap scheduled for Saturday morning,
convention banquet Saturday night and ARRL Forum Sunday morning.
World-renown author, speaker and educator Gordon West WB6NOA will be the
keynote speaker and Jerry Wellman W7SAR <jw at desnews.com> and Rick
Lagerstrom KN6FR <kn6fr at westlog.com> will also be back.
Keep your eye on http://www.emcommwest.org or contact Event Chairman
Tony Marcin N7ACM <n7acm at wadg.org> for the latest information.
I have received reports from all over the Section regarding this year's
Field Day activities. From Las Vegas to Elko to Reno and all points in
between, amateur radio honed its skills and displayed its wares. We
received lots of outstanding publicity in both the print and television
media.
Southern District Emergency Coordinator (DEC) Glenn Hale KB7REO
<gshale1 at intermind.net> reports that thanks go to Las Vegas Repeater
Association (LVRA) <http://www.hxo.com> for coordinating with Las Vegas
Regional SKYWARN < http://www.qsl.net/lvr-skywarn/> on the use of the
146.88 repeater for SKYWARN nets when activated by the Las Vegas NWSFO.
The LVRA repeaters will help improve coverage in Clark and Southern Nye
Counties and also provide coverage along the Colorado River and into
Lincoln County.
On Saturday, August 28, the Carson Valley Radio Club (CVRC)
<http://www.cvrc.net> will be hosting the third annual Nevada Section
ARRL Forum in Carson City. In addition to members of the Section
Cabinet, ARRL Pacific Division Director Bob Vallio W6RGG
<w6rgg at arrl.org> will be reporting on the results of the July ARRL Board
of Directors meeting. Everyone is encouraged to attend and get all of
your ARRL-related questions answered.
Don Carlson KQ6FM <kq6fm at arrl.net> has been a very busy guy since he
moved to Nevada last year. First he accepted appointments as Section
Public Information Coordinator (PIC) and Northern District Emergency
Coordinator (DEC), then Section Emergency Coordinator (SEC) Dick Creley
KJ7UK appointed him Assistant SEC. Don came to us from the Santa Clara
Section where he was SEC and an Assistant Section Manager (ASM). Don has
become an outstanding resource to the Nevada Section.
Betty Field AB7LJ <ab7lj at pahrump.net> has accepted appointment as
Southern Nye County Emergency Coordinator (EC). Thanks go to previous-EC
Dick Grady AC7EL <grady at air-internet.com> for building a strong
organization. Betty reports she has appointed Richard Gamble K7RTG
<rtgamble at hotmail.com> as an Assistant EC for training and they had
eighteen people attend their June meeting.
Washoe County EC Doug Abramson KA7FOO <damail at 775.net> plans to hold a
public ARECC Level I "Hybrid" class in the Reno area starting this
month. These classes present an excellent opportunity for people to take
the ARRL ARECC courses who prefer a classroom environment. I encourage
ECs everywhere to consider holding a local ARECC course. You can contact
cce at arrl.org for information on holding a class in your area.
For a current list of all ARRL Nevada Section Field Appointments, you
can always check http://www.pdarrl.org/nevsec/officers.html.
Please send me your concerns, opinions, questions and newsletters. Until
next month,
73, Dick K7VC <k7vc at arrl.org>
Nevada Section Manager
