Greetings to everyone in the Nevada Section!

January was a relatively slow month for a lot of us as we tried to
recover from the holidays and the North in particular worked through
just about every conceivable type of winter weather!

Last year's EMCOMMWEST was a major success due to the hard work of Paul
Cavnar NN7B < [email protected]>. This year the expanded two-day emergency
communications symposium is being combined with the Reno Spring Ham Swap
for a fully-loaded May 22-23 weekend. A half-dozen northern clubs are
all pulling together under the coordination of Frank Nance W6MN
<[email protected]> to make EMCOMMWEST 2004 a very successful
regional event. Check http://www.emcommwest.org for the latest
information.

Assistant Section Manager (ASM) Joe Giraudo <[email protected]> reports
officials of the National Weather Service presented the Elko Amateur
Radio Club (EARC) <http://www.qsl.net/w7lko/> with a letter and plaque
in thanks for their participation in the 2003 SKYWARN Awareness Day
Special Event. The Elko Club finished in First Place for all western
region weather service stations and placed 14th overall in the nation.

The Frontier Amateur Radio Society (FARS) reports one of their members
Pat Hess NK7C <[email protected]> will be joining the Northern Ohio DX Club
sponsoring a major DX operation to Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean.
Rodrigues is the most easterly point of territory of the African
continent, 2800 miles off the coast of Mozambique.

Southern District Emergency Coordinator Glenn Hale KB7REO
<[email protected]> reports that most ARES activity this past month
was related to the progress made with Echolink and IRLP. Technical
Coordinator, Kent Johnson W7AOR <[email protected]> has worked extra hours
to install an Echolink/IRLP bridge called NV-GATE (152566) on the 146.46
(123) simplex frequency in Las Vegas.

Clark County Emergency Coordinator Charlie Kunz AA5QJ <[email protected]>
attended the organizational meeting of the Southern Nevada Community
Organizations Active in Disaster (SNvCOAD) on January 22. The mission of
the COAD is to enhance the community's ability to mitigate, prepare for,
respond to and recover from disasters through cooperation,
communication, coordination and collaboration.

The Sierra Nevada Amateur Radio Society (SNARS) <http://www.snars.org>
produced a well-attended open Q&A Forum at the Veterans Administration
Medical Center in Reno on January 10. Forty-six people turned out to
share their knowledge, meet and learn from each other, hear about
activities of local ham organizations, and partake in some refreshments.

SNARS's also pledged to support the new Elmer Program that has taken off
in the Reno area. This project is to provide assistance to new hams and
newcomers and was initiated by SNARS members Donn Fisher W7DAF
<[email protected]> and Matt Parker N7TOD <[email protected]>,
both of whom felt there was a need to offer the support of experienced
hams in getting newcomers active on the area.

Last month I reported that Sue Pfeiffer N7PRF (wife of Bruce N7CPP) was
in poor health. It is with a heavy heart that I report Sue passed away
January 30th. Bruce and his family have our deepest sympathy.
