Special Weather Statement
239 PM PST Sat Dec 25 2004

...Major winter storm possible Thursday and Friday...

The upper ridge that has dominated the region recently is breaking
down as a cold upper low dives south along the Pacific northwest
coast. This first of two upper lows this coming week will slide
south to off the Southern California coast by Tuesday afternoon.
This storm looks to affect Southern California more than the Sierra.
However...the Sierra will see some snowfall Monday and Tuesday.
The storm will begin to move inland Wednesday...as a second and
more potent storm kicks it east.

The main storm of concern is expected to dive south from the Gulf
of Alaska and be centered west of Vancouver...British Columbia by
Thursday morning...before slowly rotating south along the Pacific
northwest coast through Friday night. The expected progression of
this storm matches closely the pattern of previous significant snow
events in the Sierra and western Nevada. This storm has the
potential to dump more than 3 feet of snow in the Sierra...with a
foot or more in the valleys of western Nevada. Additionally...
treacherous driving conditions...with gusty winds and heavy
snow...may accompany the storm across the Sierra Thursday and
Friday...including Interstate 80 over Donner Summit.

Persons planning travel in the Sierra or western Nevada for the
second half of this coming week should stay alert for the latest
forecasts...and be prepared for life threatening winter driving
conditions. Check NOAA Weather Radio...the internet...or your local
news source for the latest updates to this significant situation.
