Greetings to everyone in the Nevada Section!

I am saddened to report that ARRL and the entire amateur community have lost
another great supporter. Al Walker KD7MXR passed away Saturday, November 27,
after being diagnosed with terminal spinal cancer. Al held an appointment as
an Official Emergency Station (OES) and was one of the mainstays of the
Douglas County Amateur Radio Team (ARES/RACES). Whenever the call went out for
volunteers, Al was always one of the first to respond. We all learned a great
deal from Al and will miss him greatly.

Assistant Section Manager (ASM) Gary Hartman KK7LV <kk7lv at arrl.net> seems to
be slowing down in his old age. He only participated in seven amateur radio
events in November, including three club meetings, two planning sessions, a
two-day bike race and Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting. I am sure
once he retires, however, he will be able to get more involved. As always, my
hat is off to Gary for all his hard work.

On Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th, amateur radio stations and
operators throughout the country participated in SKYWARN Recognition Day
activities and Nevada was no exception. Amateur radio stations were brought
online at National Weather Service offices in Reno, Elko and Las Vegas,
resulting in hundreds of contacts around the country and around the world. For
more information on SKYWARN Recognition Day, check out
http://hamradio.noaa.gov/

December 11th saw an EMCOMMWEST 2005 planning meeting in Reno followed by a
quarterly Washoe County ARES meeting. EMCOMMWEST 2005 is being planned to be a
major event to be held May 14-15 at the Reno Holiday Inn. Mark Spencer WA8SME
will be flying out from ARRL Headquarters to present our Keynote Address and
our Banquet speaker will be Gordon West WB6NOA. With a parking lot swap meet
on Saturday, it will be an event you won't want to miss. Check
http://emcommwest.org/ for more information.

Southern District Emergency Coordinator (DEC) Glenn Hale KB7REO
<kb7reo at yahoo.com> reports additions and changes in his district. The biggest
news was the appointment of Ron Payne WB5KLJ of Goldfield as the Esmeralda
County Emergency Coordinator (EC). Betty Field AB7LJ of Pahrump has stepped
down as South Nye County EC due to personal reasons and Jerry Fuge KC6ILH will
be the new EC. Fred Jones KE7APH will be the area's new RACES Officer and
Assistant EC.

Clark County EC Charlie Kunz AB5QJ <ab5qj at arrl.net> reports that of the
thirty-two hams who supported communications for the MS150 Bike Ride,
twenty-nine were ARES/RACES members. The ride went from the Las Vegas Speedway
to Mesquite through the Valley of Fire on Saturday, November 6, and the return
ride went from Mesquite to the Speedway along I-15 the following day. Thanks
to the Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club <http://www.lvrac.org/> for the use of the
Communications Trailer for the MS150 Command Post.

Section Emergency Coordinator (SEC) Don Carlson KQ6FM <kq6fm at arrl.net> reports
that his organization recently set up a Saturday morning ARES Leadership Net
via IRLP in order to provide better dialogue and communication between all
areas of the state, especially between Northern and Southern DECs. Their first
attempt was a good one with SEC and both DECs having a good conversation. For
more information on IRLP see http://www.irlp.net/ or contact Section Technical
Coordinator Kent Johnson W7AOR <w7aor at narri.org>.

As we enter the final holiday season for 2004, I would like to thank all
members of the ARRL Field Organization for their hard work and support.
Without their commitment to improving the ARRL and the amateur community, many
of the technical advancements and emergency responses we tend to take for
granted would never happen. I also wish all ARRL members health and happiness
for the New Year. Never forget it is your support of ARRL that keeps the
amateur radio service moving forward.

For a current list of all ARRL Nevada Section Field Appointments, you can
always check http://www.pdarrl.org/nevsec/officers.html.

Please send me your concerns, opinions, questions and newsletters. Until next
month,

73, Dick K7VC <k7vc at arrl.org>
Nevada Section Manager
