Special Weather Statement
730 am PST Tue Mar 11 2003

...A wet and windy weather pattern develops over the area Thursday
through Sunday...

A low pressure system develops near the west coast by Thursday with
a strong Pacific jetstream driving a cold front into northern CA.
Strong and possibly damaging winds are expected to develop ahead of
the front by mid day Thursday...primarily affecting the lee slopes
of the northern Sierra and the Highway 395 corridor from Mono County
north through extreme western Nevada to Lassen County CA. Possibly
heavy precipitation is expected to reach northeast CA and northern
Sierra Thursday...spreading south to Mono County Thursday night into
Friday.

Heavy rain or snow at times is possible over the Sierra from late
Thursday through Sunday. Initially high snow levels Thursday will
range from 6500 feet in northeast CA to near 8000 feet over Mono
County CA...gradually lowering to around 4500 to 5500 feet Sunday.
Periods of strong gusty winds are also possible across the Sierra
and western Nevada through Sunday.

The stormy period has the potential for snowfall over the High
Sierra to be measured in feet through the episode. The combination
of rain or snow and strong winds in the Sierra is likely to produce
hazardous weather conditions for motorists and back country
activities. Persons planning be in the Sierra from Thursday through
Sunday should listen to NOAA Weather Radio and or a favorite news
source for the latest information on this developing storm system.
