Greetings to everyone in the Nevada Section!
On Sunday, May 4th, we traveled to Visalia, California, to attend a
special meeting of ARRL Section Managers and Section Emergency Coordinators
from both the Southwestern and Pacific Divisions. Organized by Vice-Directors
Tuck Miller NZ6T <[email protected]> and Andy Oppel N6AJO <[email protected]>, eight
Section Managers and numerous other section representatives were in
attendance. Next year an even longer meeting is planned.
Saturday, May 10th was the date for the Reno Spring Hamswap, an event
combining the annual Spring Ham Swap with the Summer Hamfest. As a
cooperative effort between the Reno Area Metro Simplex (RAMS)
<http://www.nvrams.org> and Sierra Nevada Amateur Radio Society (SNARS)
<http://www.snars.org> clubs, the event was an unqualified success and even
attracted our own Division Director Bob Vallio W6RGG <[email protected]>.
Also on the 10th, Assistant Section Manager Gary Hartman KK7LV
<[email protected]> attended the Frontier Amateur Radio Society (FARS) meeting.
FARS recently lost one of its most active members when Jim Frye NW7O moved to
Montana, but President Al Olcott K7ICW <[email protected]> has a full schedule of
activities planned for the coming year.
Three weeks later Reno was again host to a special event: the
long-anticipated emergency communications symposium EMCOMMWEST 2003.
Organized by Paul Cavnar NN7B <[email protected]> and the Northern Nevada Amateur
Radio Services (NNARS) <http://www.qsl.net/nnars/> group, the day-long event
attracted over 120 participants, including presentations by representatives of
the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, National Weather Service, Military
Affiliate Radio System and ARRL Nevada Section.
Next year an even larger two-day event is planned and may even be
combined with the Spring Hamswap for one very full amateur weekend. With Reno
being a prime tourist attraction throughout the west, the attraction for
amateurs and their families should guarantee another successful event.
Southern District Emergency Coordinator Glenn Hale KB7REO
<[email protected]> traveled to North Nye County and met with Emergency
Coordinator Bruce Lafferty K7LAF <[email protected]> where they discussed the
universal problem of finding ARES members in the rural areas of Nevada.
Washoe County Emergency Coordinator Matt Parker N7TOD <[email protected]>
has been doing a great deal of work with the local SKYWARN group and they have
received several activations lately because of potentially destructive
thunderstorms in the area. Matt has established an informative web site at
http://www.renoskywarn.org .
The month only had a few days remaining when I received an e-mail from
Squeak Porray AD7K <[email protected]>. Squeak had received a request from
State Senator Bob Coffin <[email protected]> for help getting a change
made to Assembly Bill 441. AB-441 was proposing to give the Governor's Office
authority to ban all disaster agency frequency lists, which could include a
great many ARES and RACES repeaters and other stations.
Within a matter of days (and within hours of the scheduled closing of the
legislative session) concerned amateurs had contacted their State law makers
and obtained an eleventh-hour amendment removing the miss-guided wording.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.
Field Day is only a few weeks away. Please support your local club and
join in the fun!

Finally, my apologies to Charlie Kunz AA5QJ for misspelling his name for
about the twenty-third time. If I keep this up, I'm afraid Charlie won't talk
to me again! Sorry, Charlie.
Please send me your concerns, opinions, questions and newsletters. Until
next month,
73, Dick W6OLD <[email protected]>
