Special Weather Statement
330 am PDT Sat may 18 2002
...A cold storm system off the west coast will bring windy and
cooler weather to Nevada late this weekend and into the first part
of the coming week...
A seasonably cool weather system will move towards the southeast
from the Gulf of Alaska this weekend. Windy conditions Saturday will
become very windy over the entire area Sunday as temperatures
gradually cool 10-15 degrees by Sunday.
A chance of showers will spread across the northern Sierra late
Sunday and over western Nevada Sunday night. Snow levels will drop
to near 5500-6500 feet from the west Sunday night. Mountain snow
and valley showers and thunderstorms are likely Monday as the low
moves inland. Snow levels will be at their lowers by Monday at
around 5000 to 6000 feet with temperatures cooling another 10-15
degrees.
The storm will move east of the area Tuesday with lingering showers
and temperatures remaining cool.
Travelers and people planning activities in the Sierra and western
Nevada Sunday and Monday should anticipate strong winds with
temperatures turning much colder. Rain and snow Sunday night and
Monday will produce winter driving conditions to mountain passes.
Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for further
details or updates.
