Thought all could benefit from my research. How do plan on protecting your portable generator durning a storm? Generators must be kept out of the rain so how can you protect the generator and still be able to take a hot shower. I have done some research and found the following. You can built a shelter out of a storage shed and add fans and such, you can build one out of wood or metal, or buy a pre made "tent" for the generator. Let's take the storage shed one first. You need to keep a min of five feet around the machine for air circulation, I think more since a generator is a air cooled engine that is the only way it gets cooled and will last. You also need to be mindfully of the exhaust. The exhaust pipe/manifold gets extremely hot and produces carbon monoxide the silent killer. Hence the fans. You can buy a kit to add fans to a shelter. Some people build the shelter out of wood but the before mentioned items still come into play. The there is the gen tent made by gen tent for about 200.00 it mounts to the generators frame and has fiberglass rods which arch over the machine and a fabric cover goes over the rods. This was going to be what I was going to buy if this last ideal didn't work. I found this simple low cost idea on line. You go to Lowe's and buy a large plastic mixing tray/ pond liner for 14.00 and get some bungee cords. Invert the tub and bungee it to the frame. Allows air movement and keeps the rain off. This works on my Generac gp6500e generator. Oh and I found the low cost trays can be used for many other uses. Hope this helpful to someone.
