Bill,
He stepped out of his workshop on Sunday evening and fell flat on his face.  Getting to the emergency room was a task, but that's a story for another day.  They X-Rayed his leg to see if it was broken, and, no, the diagnosis was a blown quad ligament in his left leg.  (The quad or "rectile femur ligament", attaches the muscle on the top of the thigh to the patella and that allows one to pull the lower leg up horizontal while sitting down, or a person to stand up from a sitting position.)  Without it attached, you cannot stay standing upright, hence his fall leaving the workshop.

I took him down to Berlin to see the doctor on Tuesday (Monday was a holiday), and they put him right into the hospital, thereafter.  Later, after I left, they decided to operate this morning (Wednesday), and I got a call from the doctor at 11:00am to say that the operation went well and that he would be back on the floor by mid afternoon, as he was when I called around 6:00pm.

It looks like he's going to be transferred to a hospital-affiliated rehab nursing facility in Berlin on Friday or Saturday, and will be there for up to a month, depending upon the progress he makes getting up, walking and getting the knee to flex properly.  You can call him tomorrow at 603-326-5934 (direct to his room), if you want, although I don't know exactly when they plan to transfer him.  He may be gone at any time then or afterwards.  They don't consult with me on those decisions, hi hi.  73 . . . r2m
