Ham radio had a VERY successful day at the Bloomin Metric today.
For whatever reason, there were a tremendous number of broken bicycles, flat
tires, and people unable to finish the route (including two 9-1-1 calls).
All of them were handled by the ham radio communications team, which had
operational control of the eight support vehicles (including vehicle
scheduling and dispatching). In addition, we provided communications for
two rest stops and some of the senior ride organizers.
The Treasurer of the Sound Cyclists was one of the support vehicle
drivers/mechanics (he rode with Chris KB1QXR as his radio operator). After
the ride was over he came up to us to thank us and stated that after hearing
what we handled, he realized that the ride would be a chaotic disaster (his
words) if not for the communications we provide. One thing that we never
realized before is that the organizers of the ride really did not know just
how much ham radio handles and takes off their shoulders.
I would like to thank the following SARA members for their superb work
today.
