I am following up on Jon’s recent email regardingupcoming SARA public service events including the “Blooming Metric” and “Hopein Motion”.
I realize some of you may not be familiar withwhat our “public service” involves, and, more importantly, how you can help.
If you have already volunteered to help for oneof these events, THANK YOU.
If you are unable to volunteer because of priorobligations, thank you for your consideration.
If you have not volunteered, I encourage you tocontinue reading this email. Somekey points I think are important:
Things you DON’T need:
Ø Experience. Period. First timers are happilywelcomed.
Ø A special license. Technician is fine.
Ø A radio. We will either pair you with someone who does, or find someone in theclub to loan you a radio for the day.
Ø Transportation. Someone will be happy to give you a ride.
Things you DO need:
Ø A desire to have fun.
Ø A desire to help the club.
Ø A desire to learn.
Ø Maybe a little patience.
Tomorrow (Sunday), we will be support GNARC forthe “Blooming Metric” 100 mile bike ride. The course begins and ends at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, and windsup through central CT and back. GNARC is placing Hams at come key rest stops, as well as pair Hams withsupport and gear (SAG) vehicles to travel the course. The bike course will openabout 7:00am and will close by 2:00pm. Hams along the course will be released once the last rider has passedtheir location.
On Sunday, June 5, SARA will be supporting the BennettCancer Center “Hope In Motion” Walk, Run by providing operators along the 50mile bike course. The course begins and ends at Columbus Park in Stamford, andwinds its way North through Pound Ridge around the Titicus Reservoir and back. We are planning to station Hams at therest stops and at key intersections along the course to report the progress ofthe race and to report needs for assistance. In addition, we are planning topair Hams with support and gear (SAG) vehicles to travel the course. The bike course will open at about 7:30AM and will close by 2:00pm. Hams along the course will be released once thelast rider has passed their location.
At the present time, we do not have enoughvolunteers to staff the entire course for either event. Sound interesting? Readon...
There is NO NEED for you to be an experiencedpublic service communicator to participate. If you're new, just let us know andwe'll see that you're assigned to work with an experienced ham.
What do you need to bring? An H/T with a sparebattery is really all that you need. The following items will be useful toensure that you have good communications:
Ø A headset or a set of earphones -- it can getloud at the rest stops
Ø Agel cell or other high capacity 12 v battery with a power cable matching yourH/T
Ø A portable antenna and mast
Ø It may be possible to operate from a mobile atsome of the locations.
If you would like to volunteer, you may volunteerby replying this message, or by contacting Jon Perelstein, WB2RYV, at: jon.perelstein at gmail.com or via thephone number found here: http://www.ctsara.org/mail.htm
