Report on GBARC's deployment during the storm.

They are considered an integral part of Bridgeport's emergency response effort
(they were deployed 12 times in 2010).

Note however that most of their effort is not radio based, it's telephone and
web-based communications. For example, they man the telephone info lines for
the general public.

Subject: GBARC Winter Deployment January 11th & 12th 2011

Dear GBARC Members,
The GBARC Officers would like to thank all of the members who helped with
the second deployment of 2011. Leading the charge was Kevin-N1KGM, along
with Al-N1AHS, Mike Singewald-N1PLH, Betty Stroll-Pass-KB1UKJ, Marianne
Samokar-KB1URZ, Connie Lasky-KB1UJX,Don Peterson-KB1UZQ, Larry Reed-AB1JC.
Tuesday January 11th started off with an 8:00 am preparation meeting,
reviewing the plans for staffing the ESF-2 communication at the EOC. Kevin
represented our group who supported message handling, phone call logging,
Q-Alert data entry, and Web EOC, in preparation for the evening deployment.
At 6:30 p.m. the first wave of volunteers arrived at the Bridgeport EOC. At
9:50, the snow started. Kevin, Al, and Mike manned the EOC overnight through
Wednesday morning. Larry Reed and Connie Lasky arrived at 5:00 am and
relieved the night shift. As the sun came up, the phone activity went
through the roof. Just before lunch, Don Peterson, Betty Stroll-Pass, and
Marianne Samokar arrived to relieve the morning crew. Special thanks go out
to Mike Johnston- N1MCJ and Freddie Martin W1BIQ who volunteered to shuttle
people to and from the EOC, using their 4 wheel drive vehicles. In addition
to the members who deployed, Art Dugas-KD1AWD, Joe Hawthorne-KN1RRG, Gary
Moyher-WE1M, and Larry Gross-W1LAG, were on standby for Wednesday
deployment. Over the course of the storm, GBARC handled over 300 phone calls
and entered these into the Q-Alert database. These calls were also
documented in hard copy as the calls came in. Kevin and Al Operated the
Hi-Band Radio Communications with Dan Worzel at the Greenwich EOC. 6
situation reports were compiled and posted on WEB-EOC, which provides an
overall synopsis of the progress of the incident throughout the entire
deployment. Calls ranged from routine questions about street plowing, to an
emergency health issue involving a Bridgeport resident with chest pains.
GBARC was recognized to Media of TV WTNH-8 & NEWS-12 & WICC-60AM Radio by
Mayor Bill Finch, Scott Appleby, and Chief Gaudette for our continuous
support throughout the storm.
