MAJOR HURRICANE IRENE FORECAST TO BECOME CATEGORY 4 STORM BY THURSDAY MORNING…
BECOMING MORE LIKELY TO IMPACT NEW ENGLAND THIS WEEKEND…
 
At 11:00 AM the center of Major Hurricane Irene was located at 22.4 North 73.9 West (Approximately 285 Miles Southeast of Nassau in the Bahamas).  Irene has maximum sustained winds of 115 MPH and is moving to the Northwest at 12 MPH.  
 
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is forecasting that Irene will continue to intensify and will reach Category IV by Thursday morning.  Irene is then forecast to move through the Bahamas on Thursday as the hurricane begins a gradual turn to the North and starts to pick up some speed.  
 
Irene is then forecast to move up the East Coast and make landfall in Southeast coastal Connecticut around 5:00 PM on Sunday afternoon as a strong Category I hurricane.  Irene is still 4 days away and additional changes to the track forecast are likely.
 
The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will issue another update on Irene at 3:30 PM this afternoon.
