Tomas regains hurricane strength, moving near western Haiti
Updated: 4:50 a.m. 

Tomas regained hurricane strength overnight along its track between southwest Haiti and eastern Cuba. According to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the center of Tomas will pass near western Haiti Friday morning and near or over extreme eastern Cuba during the day.
 
At 5 a.m. EDT Friday, Hurricane Tomas was located about 145 miles south of Guantanamo, Cuba or 175 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It was moving northeast at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.
 
Because most of the rough weather is on the east side of the system, Haiti is most under the gun, and the main threat remains heavy rainfall.
