[CTSARA] Generators

A tip for amazon URLs- to shorten them, dump everything before /dp/ and
after the number that follows it...
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P9UOB6/ links to your ETQ genset and it doesn't
get text wrapped :)
The ETQ looks nice and the price is definitely right, although keep in mind
that the 4000w is peak power, it's only 3250w continuous. Reviews say
voltage fluctuation is very low which is definitely a good thing.
I'm not a fan of the blue one, mainly because it's 2-cycle but also because
it's so small. 2-cycle means you have two consumables to worry about, which
seems unwise if it's to be used in an emergency. And 880w is really not
very much, sure it'd run a few radios with no problem but not much more,
which is going to be a problem next time the power fails and you want to run
radios+fridge+furnace off it...
"Too poor to buy cheap things"... I like that...
I've always been a fan of the little Hondas (EU2000i in particular), they're
small, light, quiet, inverter-based (so you get a clean sine wave w/out
frequency fluctuations) and they have a 12v output right on the generator.
Downside of course is cost, new they're $1k+. But you can usually find one
on ebay for $700-800... still a lot more $/watt than the ETQ though.
Lastly, there was a good article about generators in the June 2008 QST, it's
not available online yet but I can try to find it and scan it if anyone
needs it...

I've been considering ordering this one from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/TG32P12-Portable-Generator-Non-CARB-Compliant/dp/B000P
9UOB6/ref=sr_1_1
4000W $360 with free shipping, brand new with warranty
Harbor Freight also has some really cheap generators. I've been considering
this one for field work:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66619
42 lbs, 880W, $150
(they have many other models)
They have two locations in CT:
BERLIN, CT 179 WEBSTER SQUARE
VERNON, CT 35 TALCOTTVILLE RD,STE 14
Evidently, a cheap generator is just that... My father always used to say we
are too poor to buy cheap things.
I think for emergency situations the ideal generator would be a 4-stroke
diesel.
