Hi Gents,
I drove to Brow Head this morning to have another look at where we might
site ourselves. I've made a sketch (attached) with some suggestions. We
could fit a tent inside the standing walls of some ruins that would provide
shelter from any wind. This could be used for our operating position and
the generator could be sited in the lee of the Martello Tower--providing
shelter from the wind and just about accessible from the track up from the
parking area. It's also far enough away from the operating position so we
shouldn't hear the genny, but we'll need 50m of power cable. I've got an 8m
cable with 32A plugs and a 10m cable with 16A plugs. Does anyone have
cables that can make up the difference? The genny has both 32A and 16A
plugs but we're better using the 32A connection with the amplifier in mind.
Dave tells me the weather forecast is not good for the weekend, and that for
backup it would be good to have a second (remote) location with easy
access. If we are able to get into Brow Head after all, having another
location will allow a second station since we don't have bandpass filters.
A good place for this is a council parking lot the at start of the road up
to Brow Head, just off the main road 1 mile out of Crookhaven (coming from
Cork, it's 300m past the turning for Mizen Head). It's big enough for
several large caravans and some cars, and is about 10m from a sandy beach.
I'll see if we need permission to site the second station there. It will be
more visible to the public which isn't a bad thing as there was a write-up
about us in the parish newsletter last week. I've had several calls already
with people asking about it.
I won't make it tonight after all but will be interested to hear what's
discussed. Have a look at Ei5IMD on QRZ.com. I want to tweak it some more
and need some frequencies to post as to where people might find us. Also,
are the operators correct? I don't have Hans' call sign.
