[Collins] Side tone with Collins original S Line

I am having a problem with the amplitude of the side tone generated by my
Collins 32S-1.  It is too loud and I have to use the AF control on the
receiver to turn it down then turn the receiver up when I have stopped
sending.  This seems to be counterintuitive on a piece of equipment that is
supposed to be the Cadillac of rigs.  On the 32S-3, I see they put a
screwdriver pot just to the right of the VFO on the chassis.  That makes
sense.  What have others done with the older S Line.  I suspect I will just
install a potentiometer but have I missed something from the way the rig is
supposed to be set up.
