G'day 
just to add a bit of wisdom to the marketing date of the 618S-1: there used to be a German airline magazine called INTERAVIA where the ads make interesting reading. As a boy I bought 3 issues in 1954/55 covering interesting subjects like ads for the Lockheed Super Constellation! Luckily I kept these...
Now more to the point: there is an ad from Collins (in German) advertising the 618S, the 18S, the 180L-3, the 614D etc. describing the 618S/180L combination  as the best for HF! This ad hangs framed in my office... The details: INTERAVIA (9th Year) Number 12, 1954, page 795. So very likely the market entry in the US was even before that.
