[Collins] 51S-1

Hi Lynn, thanks for the reply.
I think finding a KWM-2 for the cabinet would be a mixed blessing. I would want
to restore the transceiver! I was in Ground Radio when I was in the Air Force
many years ago. Among other things, I worked on Mars KWM-2As along with the 30L
and 30S-1 amplifiers. Mostly worked on UHF equipment like the GRA-53 / -54,
GRC-27, GRT-3 beasts and then there was the TRC-89 van with the KWT-6 in it. I
really like the KWT-6.

Plan B is to install the 51S-1 in a rack mount cabinet that I already have along
with a small 5 amp switching power supply and a fan.

I am afraid that I will have to re-engineer the 28 volt power supply and draw
the schematic. I have to take it apart to check caps anyway so it hopefully
won't take too long. Still, I think it is a copy of a Collins product that was
made with a lot of skill. There is no wasted space that I can see when the
cover is removed. All components are packed in tightly. If it is HB, then the
guy really knew what he was doing, this is no slap-it-together project.

This long vacation finds me in Washington, about 100 miles north of Portland,
OR. Any places to visit to see boatanchors? Next week begins a slow trek back
to Arkansas.
Regards,
Jim

Jim
My 51S-1 also came with out a case and was originally rack mounted. I found a
case from a KWM-2 that was not in the best shape and did some body work to make
it look good. I simply took and enlarged the smaller cutout on the back to look
exactly liked the large cutout and it fits on the 51S-1 perfectly. Now it is
just time for a trip to the paint booth and I don't think anyone will ever know
it was not an original receiver case. You may want to keep on the lookout for a
KW2 case and do the mod that I did.

Interesting configuration on the power supply!
