David,
My own thoughts are that before worrying about replacement parts for the
PTO, removing the PTO from the S-Line rig and disassembly of the PTO and a
thorough cleaning of the slug and the likely congealed grease from years
past will make all the difference in the world. I routinely do that to any
S-Line piece of equipment that I have. Do the same for any other parts that
don't appear to be working as you think they should.
WARNING: Do disassembly in a pan with reasonable sides and watch carefully
for the "ball" at the back end of the shaft. More than one of us have had
the bad experience of losing that ball in a wad of congealed grease, never
again to be seen.
Yes, this takes time and perhaps patience but there are online good
explanations with pictures if you are going to do this. Note carefully the
order of any items on the shaft of the PTO or drive shaft.
I suggest NOT trying to do this with the PTO connected to the rig. Take the
time to make a few digital pictures and/or drawings and unsolder carefully
and get the PTO separated just as though you were going to replace it.
Doing this I've never been disappointed no matter how poorly the PTO worked
beforehand.
Yes, any old digital counter or another calibrated receiver that covers the
range of the PTO frequency (look in the manual and understand how it works)
makes it quite easy to recalibrate things when assemblying.
