Jerry,

your comment re the magnetic cartridge and its
output range rang a bell, and for the life of me,
I can't imagine an AC/DC powered amp being lined
up with a magnetic phono cartridge.

Normally, weren't magnetic cartridges much more
of a high end audio device, and were probably never
paired up with the typical low-end AC/DC powered
amp?  Seems like that would be a real mismatch
in audio capabilities.
