[Collins] Collins nomenclature

Well, the 30L-1 "looks like" the rest of the S-Line
equipment! It has basically the same size cabinet,
etc. I really don't think it is an "orphan".
Now, the 30S-1 (and the 30S-3 of which there were
reportedly 3 made) runs considerably more power than
the 30L-1 and therefore requires a much larger
cabinet.
As I said above, I believe that there were 3 of the
30S-3 linears manufactured. I know that the late
W5QBM (who lived across the golf course from me) had
one. He was medically retired from Collins Radio and
was involved in the sales department.
As for the "L" in the 30L-1 the "L" stood for
"linear". However, the 30L-1 as we know it is
actually the second item made by Collins that had the
30L-1 nomenclature. The original 30L-1 was a complete
SSB / CW / AM transmitter that ran 1000 watts input.
Collins also had just the exciter which was called the
32W-1. There were all sorts of 4-page color
advertisements announcing the 30L-1 transmitter (along
with the 75A4 receiver) in all of the major amateur
radio magazines and even the 1956 ARRL Radio Amateur's
Handbook. But, before any were actually shipped Art
Collins decided to change the name to KWS-1.
However, even after the name change the photographs
used in the early advertisements for the KWS-1 were
not changed. If you look very close you will see that
the nameplate on the transmitter still reads 30L-1.

Then I'm confused. How does the 30S-1 and 30L-1 fit
into the picture. The 30L-1 matches the rest of the S
Line while the 30S-1 doesn't.
All follows suit with the 32S series, or the 51S
series, or the 75S series, and then there the 30L-1
like an orphan chick.
