Probably 50 years ago, GC made a cement for the purpose.
But I recall some being put back with furnace cement. That furnace
cement was probably a mix of iron or graphite powder with sodium
silicate, otherwise known as water glass. Today a less filled version of
water glass or sodium silicate is sold with muffler bandages. While it can
take heat, it is also what was used further back to coat eggs for long
term storage.
I see in the 2001/2002 edition of the Home Depot ProBook that they have
Harvey Furnace Cement. Goof to 3000 F. Harvey number 45005, HD SKU
216284 for $2.99 a cartridge. Might be found in a good hardware store or
a wood stove store.
Try to keep the furnace cement under the cap. It looks ugly smeared all
over the top of the tube. You will probably have to unsolder the cap,
open up the hole for the wire, and stick the cap back and after the glue
has set, then solder it again.
