Several folk wrote urging me to just buy the cap already built for
$30. Especially since I'll be working on 75S-1 serial number 55.
This thing should be in a glass display case.
I guess the thought is, a factory capacitor will result in a better
radio rather than a hack-job.
I don't look at it that way. If I can refill the can and it looks
good, then I've got a better radio.
If I end up mangling the can, then I'm out about 5 bucks and I can
still buy the new manufacture capacitor.
If I refill the can and it looks good, then I've saved some money.
Either way, I've learned something.
I'm doing the boatanchor thing for the challenge of working on the
radios.
I started this after a hand surgery went bad and the doc said that
I had to really work my fingers. I did that by polishing the
knobs and cleaning a Heathkit SB-303.
Since then, I've been inside all sorts of mechanical devices,
commercial gas pumps, home plumbing, woodwork, sheetrock, You name
it, I've been opening it up and working on it.
I'll give it a shot. If I mess up the can, I'll buy a factory cap
and keep the Collins looking and working right.
