"last crimp"?  You mean the bottom circular crimp, all the way
around?  Yes, that does sound hard.

I don't have a lathe but I do have a drill press, dremel, and a
"fret" saw.  I suppose I could make a jig out of 2x4, align the can
in the wood support, and cut it open.  

Maybe if I get one of those "european" can openers, that one that
opens a tin can and makes a lid, I can use it on the aluminum.

When you say "use epoxy", you mean just a bead to reseal the can? 

Not, fill the can with epoxy.

I think I can refill the can myself.  The caps from Mouser are
inexpensive and I need other caps for my SB-303 and SB-200.
