Indeed, yes, inside the cover not the actual filters. But why? What does it
do? Was it simply to prevent the filters from falling out of there
reasonably secure but not at all fixed sockets? Are there any NOS
replacements? Are there any mint ones from estate sales available on
E-whatever. Can anything else be used in its' stead? What sort of pressure
should be applied to the filters for best performance? DX hounds need to
know.

The foam that you speak of was used INSIDE the mechanical filter cover.
Over the years, it decomposed.
