Glen,

        You have the patience of Jobe.  I commend you for it.  All of this
hellablu over a 50 cent diode is simply mined boggleing.  Any silicon diode
with a 400 volt PIV should work fine.  There is NO best diode for this
purpose.  If it were me, and I have only been repairing Collins gear for
about 40 years, I would pull a diode out of the junk box, paying absolutely
no attention to what type, and try it.  If it was still working after a few
days, I would be happy and go on to something a little more productive.  If
it failed, I would replace it with a 1N4007 or a 1N5407 (if you really want
some over-kill)  and never have another thought about it.  A simple
rectifier diode is not the Holy Grail.
