[Collins] Best receiver?

I agree with the assessment of the 51S1 as not worth the money it usually
sells for. This is from my professional experience.

I made my living in the early 60's using communications receivers - I won't
go into details...
Anyway, we had racks of 51J4's, some SP-600's and some R-390A's. Then a
number of 51S1's arrived. After evaluating on-the-air performance, the
operators preferred the 51J4's and R-390A's for CW/RTTY and the 51S1's were
set aside for strong signal SSB only, as they were inferior in selectivity
and sensitivity to the R-390A's and the 51J4's (which had to use external
SSB/RTTY adaptors anyway). The 51S1's were more convenient to use due to the
built-in product detector but were not performing well under QRM and/or weak
signal conditions.

I have 120 "professional" and ham tube receivers in my collection -
covering the time period from WW2 to the end of the tube era - but due to my
experience with them I never had the desire to own a 51S1, even when I had
the opportunity to pick one up for an extremely reasonable price...
