It took a strong ammonia industrial cleaner to clean pipe tar off the
knobs of a 51J3 that I have. The panel cleaned with 409 (smooth epoxy
paint), but the knobs stained the paper towels with tar after several
washes. That ammonia cleaner from the hardware store cleaned them in one
pass, but now they need buffing to get them smooth again.
There are lots of crannies in the CP to hold smoke odor and tar, may
take a pass through a dishwasher to get cleaner into them. Though dishes
washed in that dishwasher may have a smoke odor for a while afterwards.
