Well, not only is my pristene 75S-1 an older model with the
ribbed meter. It has a two digit serial number. I guess this
means that it is 46 years old.

I haven't pulled it out of the case but I can see oldish
looking paper electrolytics in it.

I listened to some CW and SSB again tonight. Sounds very nice,
smoother than my SB-303 or ICOM.  I don't have a good antenna;
it's just fifty feet of speaker wire hanging out the back
window. I'm on a small city lot so I'm not sure that I have
enough back yard to string a 40 meter dipole.

I looked at the 75S-1 manual, I'm guessing that C56, the 100 uf
electrolytic sets the AGC time constant.

My book doesn't have instructions for setting the endpoints
of the PTO. I did see some info on the web about it but didn't
print it out. Glancing at the schematic, it's probably a
matter of setting the capacitor at one end of the range and the
inductor at the other and tuning back and forth with the PTO
until it lines up.

I looked a bit more at eBay and still am amazed that speakers
are so valuable. The fellow who sold me the 75S-1 had a
display of speakers of various vintages, Not just Collins,
Hallicrafters, National. I have one of the Hallicrafters
speakers, it's the one with the die cast case.

It's not a good speaker, it never was. It was expensive when I
got it in 1962.

I also saw the write up on the web for the external digital PTO
and crystal synthesizer. I think it's from Italy.

Then there's the bolt-on crystal bank. Like swapping crystals
but you don't have to pull the crystals, just turn a knob.

Both are interesting solutions but I don't need to "general
coverage" my 75S-1. I have a good SX-100 and a general
coverage receiver in my ICOM transceiver.

de ah6gi/4 Still mostly Heathkits but learning to like the
75S-1.
