The button in the center of the knob is in the center of the 
mode switch on the 32S3(A) for spotting. Stock factory 
construction. The operation was to push the spot button 
and tune the PTO to match the receiver, different place for 
CW than for SSB when not transceiving.

There have been kits to make counters for multiple 
conversion receivers for some time. One fits the S-line, one 
could fit the R-390 though most are configured to be 
separate boxes. There would probably be room in a 390 
with the dial drums removed to mount such a counter and 
display there. It would be far easier today than in 1975 with 
the counter requiring far fewer chips.
