What I use is a DC "wall wort" that supposedly puts
out 12 VDC under load.  However, the voltage with no
load is around 18 volts DC.  Just wire the mute
contacts on the changeover relay in series with the
positive lead.

It really isn't a mod of any type, you just apply the
voltage to the terminals on the back of the receiver.
