Dear all,

I use a Viking Valiant on am with 200 watts plate modulated input. Of
course there are many mods out for the audio. I use mine in a stock
configuration. I used a Valiant from 1960 to 1963 and worked the world
using a Hornet tribander and a National NC-57B receiver. In 1963 I got a
Viking 500 transmitter and really got out with the 500 watts on AM
phone. It used a 4-400 modulated by a pair of 811's.

I thought that it would be great had Collins made an plate modulated AM transmitter to go with the S-line but alas, I don't think they did. So, my query is has anyone else filled that gap by putting a "like" AM xmtr with their S-line? Here's my candidate: the EF Johnson Ranger II. It has 60's vintage styling which I think is (pardon the pun) in line with the S-line. One can retain their S-line for sideband/cw work and use their "standby" 51S1 to work AM with the Ranger. Got both a 30L1 and a 30S1? Use the latter for the S-line and the former with the Ranger/51S1 setup. Just a thought. What do you think? Thanks. Cal, n6KYR.
