When I've encountered that problem, I've cleaned the entire rack and drive
parts very thoroughly and dried it of any solvent. Don't forget to thoroughly
clean out and dry the hollow parts of the shaft and collect and don't lose any
of the balls that will be stuck in the shaft waiting to sneak out when you're
not looking and get lodged in the last place you'll look when trying to find
them when you realize one or more is missing.
I've always used a very thin layer of white lithium grease, easily available
at most hardware type stores, usually in a toothpaste type tube. DO NOT put
any on plastics.
After reassembly tighten the rack shaft with the nut and Bristol screw at the
back bracket. Carefully adjust the tension a little at a time so it runs
smoothly from end to end but STILL SLIPS when you get against the stop at each
end.
For me it's always made a great deal of difference in how the tuning works.
I've always completely stripped any S-Line unit that I've had and done that
cleaning on the rack. The old greasy sticky goo that used to be the lubricant
just doesn't make for nice tuning.
