Actually, there were at least two different relays used, probably more
than two. Early radios used an open relay, short form telephone type,
that was wired in and very sensitive to bending the contact blades and
solder terminals. Later radios used a plug in relay. I prefer replacing
the solder in relay with a socket and P&B KHP series 4 pole armature
type relay with a 110 volt DC coil. I prefer that style of relay to the
telephone type because I believe the armature type relay keeps contacts
cleaner and has better contact pressure, though it can be a bit noisier
in operation.
