Thank you very much for all of the replies so far and this is what I have
checked based on your suggestions. It appears I am not alone with others
reporting the same observations.

The pot appears to be original, in fact it may be the only thing in this
radio that someone didn't change at one time or another!

The pot is an audio taper pot confirmed by comparing its resistance from the
arm to each end while in the middle of the range to another one I have
marked "audio taper".

The 50 ohms residual resistance is not all that abnormal. I measured several
similar range pots and all have some residual resistance in this range.

There were several other suggestions in terms of modifications which I will
try as well. The simplest solution may  be some form of a pad in front of
the first audio stage. Lacking having AC Peak-Peak voltage readings across
those stages it's hard to determine if I have excessive drive at the input
or excessive gain in the stages.

I have to smile when I think about trying to fix a problem that is just the
reverse of most problems!

I will report again when I fix this problem.
