Hi Bob, Thanks for the return... This agrees with the little bit of info that I found in the Collins list archives. The addition of a 6AK6 as an untuned class A buffer amp (I'm repeating what was written by others...) to boost the output of the PTO (1.6 to 2.0 Mhz) so that it can drive a transmitter oscillator... The info I have suggests that the output can be fed directly to the transmitter xtal socket. This configuration was said to have appeared in a 1949 Collins sales brochure showing a 70E-8A PTO, etc... I'm hoping someone will have one laying about in their collection that also won't mind sharing a digitized copy, since others have also expressed interest in this mod...
