I disagree with the comment about continual
maintenance.  Tube type equipment normally works for
years without any difficulties, often outlasting the
newer, solid-state equipment.

However, the comment about easier equipment for a new
amateur to use does hold water.  It depends on how
technically inclined your friend is.
