The best replacement for field repair that I have found is the ThreadSert.

You can usually find at a good hardware store, like Ace.

A single size install kit is abt $7 and the 'serts are abt 40-50 cents each.

Easy to install and I have yet to have one fail in use.   They are also
available from many places on the web.  Just use Google and search for
threadsert.  You will get abt 40 hits.
