[CoARES-D10] "This is"

Hi Randy,

Interesting comments. And you do make a good point regarding short
transmissions and linked systems. In fact, the entire "this is" expression is probably
lost at the far end of a system by the time all the CTCSS encoders and decoders
get up to speed. We may discover the same thing if D-10 aquires a linked
system of its own some day, whether RF or IRLP or whatever...

BTW, the sequence of "(key) This is... (unkey)" was brought to D-10 by Kent
Douglass. I was far more used to either "Net Control..." or "(callsign of
NCS...)", then after a pause, "This is (callsign), no traffic, over" because that's
how it was done on SSB. It always struck me as odd that you'd begin a
transmission with "This is" instead of the callsign of the called station, but it did
become a habit.

If we're comfortable with the idea that 2M nets are different from HF nets,
and that traffic nets are different from (more formal than) weeks-long fire
nets, maybe that's not a bad thing. Having the flexibility of more than one net
model means the net's 'personality' can reflect the nature of the event.

Regarding changing the repeater's flavor during nets or special events, I'd
like everyone to keep in mind that nothing's set in concrete. If changing some
timer or message makes the net work better, heck, Ace Programmer K7GN can do
anything!

73,
Bob
