First, my apologies of you are getting this multiple times because I may
have you on multiple lists.
Public Service is a major reason why we still have the ham frequencies on
loan to us from the citizens of the United States. The Odyssey of the Mind
event (see below for details about what it is) gets us hams in front of a
lot of parents, kids, and coaches (sometimes up to 800 or more people). The
kids are bright and motivated or they wouldn't be competing in the first
place, Seeing ham radio at work at this sort of event could pay untold
dividends for the future of our hobby.
The event coordinators keep asking us back each year (this will be our
fourth) and really appreciate our help.
WHEN IS IT?
The all-day event is on Saturday, April 12, 2003.
WHAT WE NEED
We need 11 hams in the morning (starting between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30
a.m.-note: some may start later. More details to follow once assignments
have been made) and 11 hams in the afternoon.. If you can work all
day-great. Working a morning or afternoon shift works great too.
WHAT IS ODYSSEY OF THE MIND?
>From the Odyssey of the Mind Website www.odysseyofthemind.com
"The Odyssey of the Mind School Program fosters creative thinking and
problem-solving skills among participating students from kindergarten
through college. It features an annual competition component at local
through international levels. Students solve problems in a variety of areas,
from building mechanical devices such as spring-driven vehicles to giving
their own interpretation of literary classics. Through solving problems,
students learn lifelong skills such as working with others as a team,
evaluating ideas, making decisions, and creating solutions while also
developing self-confidence from their experiences."
Also, they're sponsered by NASA.
The one we're covering in Greeley (at UNC) is the State Competition. It
encompasses several buildings, and we are their main communication link for
the event.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
- 440Mhz ht (If you don't have one, we'll probably have extras-just let me
know ahead of time)
- Batteries, batteries, batteries
Since we're using a repeater that's close, we can use very low
power (often under a watt) to conserve batteries.
- Headpones (a must) - even cheap Walkman-type headphones will work
- Note pad
