You may be getting this message twice if you are on the list for the =
ARES D10 reflector as the previous one is waiting for approval from the =
list moderator (I sent the original this morning). I had included other =
e-mail addresses, which may have caused an issue.

So...rather than wait for an indefinite amount of time, here it is =
again.

Public Service is a major reason why we still have the ham frequencies =
on loan to us from the citizens of the United States. The Odyssey of the =
Mind event (see below for details about what it is) gets us hams in =
front of a lot of parents, kids, and coaches (sometimes up to 800 or =
more people). The kids are bright and motivated or they wouldn't be =
competing in the first place, Seeing ham radio at work at this sort of =
event could pay untold dividends for the future of our hobby.

=20

The event coordinators keep asking us back each year (this will be our =
fourth) and really appreciate our help.

=20

WHEN IS IT?

The all-day event is on Saturday, April 12, 2003.

=20

WHAT WE NEED

We need 11 hams in the morning (starting between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 =
a.m.-note: some may start later. More details to follow once assignments =
have been made) and 11 hams in the afternoon.. If you can work all =
day-great. Working a morning or afternoon shift works great too.=20

WHAT IS ODYSSEY OF THE MIND?

>From the Odyssey of the Mind Website www.odysseyofthemind.com

=20

"The Odyssey of the Mind School Program fosters creative thinking and =
problem-solving skills among participating students from kindergarten =
through college. It features an annual competition component at local =
through international levels. Students solve problems in a variety of =
areas, from building mechanical devices such as spring-driven vehicles =
to giving their own interpretation of literary classics. Through solving =
problems, students learn lifelong skills such as working with others as =
a team, evaluating ideas, making decisions, and creating solutions while =
also developing self-confidence from their experiences."

=20

Also, they're sponsered by NASA.

=20

The one we're covering in Greeley (at UNC) is the State Competition. It =
encompasses several buildings, and we are their main communication link =
for the event.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

- 440Mhz ht (If you don't have one, we'll probably have extras-just let =
me know ahead of time)

- Batteries, batteries, batteries

Since we're using a repeater that's close, we can use very =
low power (often under a watt) to conserve batteries.

- Headpones (a must) - even cheap Walkman-type headphones will work

- Note pad
