  Hi Andy: Yes the guys are right a separate receive antenna just might be the answer. A residential antenna farm and QRM/QRN does  present problems. Many Amateurs have over come this, earning Honour Roll from a residential QTH, some 80 and 160m. So don't let that set you back. As many 1/4 wave radials as you can get down will help your vertical. For some great technical info on vertical antennas see the DX Engineering web site, left side of home page scroll down... If you have 30 square feet you might consider a K9AY receive antenna, 75 - 160m. 

  If you are determined to have a wire antenna, you could look into a random wire antenna fed into a auto tuner, I have a Icom AH-4 in use here and around the world with only good things to say about it. There is a Yahoo Icom AH-4 users group you could look into, a huge amount of first hand info there and a very help group.

  The QRM/QRN a phasing unit can be very useful, have a look into the MFJ 1026 Phasing Unit, a lot of info on the I Net. Ferrite cores and Ferrite Snap-Its can be helpful against noise on coax, cables and wires, again a lot of info on the I Net.
